The Maury Island Incident
Before Roswell.
The Maury Island Incident tells the forgotten, tragic story – taken directly from declassified FBI documents – of Harold Dahl’s June 21, 1947, UFO sighting near Maury Island, and explores the origins of the iconic Men In Black within a conspiratorial mythology set during the “summer of the saucers” in 1947, all leading directly to FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover.
The film’s honors/awards include: 2015 UFO Congress Best Short Film; Big Island Film Festival Opening Night Gala; Washington Film Works Innovative Lab Competitive Grant; Gig Harbor Film Festival Best Short; Seattle International Film Festival North American Premiere. The film was adapted into a web series distributed on Hulu and IndieFlix.
To celebrate the 70th Anniversary of the Harold Dahl's story and “The Summer of the Saucers,” the film was celebrated in 2017 with a Resolution on the floor of the Washington State Senate for its contribution to the history and popular culture of Washington State, and featured at the Washington State Historical Museum.
Because it straddles the line between history and mythology, the film and accompanying presentations by the filmmakers about J. Edgar Hoover and the Summer of the Saucers have become popular keynotes for a broad range of audiences, from historical society fundraisers to SciFi conventions.
Directed by Scott Schaefer (Bill Nye the Science Guy, Penn & Teller:Bullsh*t, The Arsenio Hall Show, Almost Live!), written by Steve Edmiston (Crimes of the Past, The Periphery Project, Vol. I, A Relative Thing, The Day My Parents Became Cool), produced by John White, Scott Schaefer, and Steve Edmiston.
